The three rules of humane tech

  1. When you invent a new technology, you uncover a new class of responsibility
  2. If the technology confers power it will start a race.
  3. If you do not coordinate, the race will end in tragedy

When infinite scroll was invented, it was in context to ticket and restaurant booking. Instead, it was repurposed to social media so that people would scroll endlessly.

Once AI took off, there were very few orgs trying to figure out how to harness and release the product responsibly. The safety teams on these companies are mostly helpless because they have to stand against the wave of profit that the VCs are expecting.

If enough actors cannot reach a consensus about how to govern what they have invented, it will be misused.
